Jan Jarboe Russell, writing in the Sept 7, 2008, San Antonio Express-News tells how the word "maverick" was born in San Antonio--in the person of Samuel Maverick.. In closing the piece, Russell relates that Maury Maverick, Jr. (Samuel's son) and a long-time columnist for the Express-News wrote over 1,000 columns over 33 years.
If he were writing this particular column today, this is what I believe Maury, Jr., direct heir of the Maverick legacy, would raise his voice to say, "I am a Maverick. I know Mavericks. And John McCain is no Maverick".
The dictionary definition of "maverick" is "a lost cow which is unbranded. Any person finding the cow can claim it and brand it.
