I have a friend who is very conservative. He thinks Michael Moore speaks hate talk. And another friend is a liberal and thinks Ann Coulter is a person who hates. The interesting thing is that the conservative does not think Coulter is hateful and the liberal does not think Moore is full of hate.
So, it seems to me that we all may identify different people as angry, hostile folks who wish hurt and ridicule upon others; but depending upon our own political perception we may have one list if we are right wing and another list if we are left wing.
Please help sort this out by saying:
You may have many "haters" on your list; please suggest them all.
At some point I hope to write a piece on the hatemongers and the role they play on our political scene.
Hi, there, neighbor! Greetings from the Hill Country! In my opinion, ALL the talking heads are hatemongers. They rant and rave, attempting to divide us from each other. All I know for sure is that we have an unemployment rate creeping up toward 20%! How about that for an issue? I think they are all tools to distract us from what's important in life. The only question I have left is WHO IS USING THE TOOLS?
Republicans and Democrats are both politicians, and none of them seem to be very interested in the American people's serious problems.
I think Michael Moore and Ann Coulture are hate mongers, they would not have a job if they didnt rile up the masses. I am a conservative but I dont think Ann represents us she is off on her own. I do like some of her points, I just think she goes a little too far sometimes. And Michael Moore just spews lies that are easily shown to be just that..Lies.
Moore takes what may be part truth and stretches it so far that it cant be considered aything but a lie. The guy is a wackjob who is out to make a buck any way he can.
How about Limbaugh, Coulter, Savage, just about all of the commentators on FOX News, Ingraham, Hal Turner, and Severin -- for starters.
Anyone that gets paid to talk for a living? Or is that just too broad a list?
I am a moderate. I think that it depends on the mongering of hate that is being peddled. For example, my oldest second son hates green beans. He would monger against them all day long.
It is the same in politics. You have those who are extreme in their views and to be that way that have to hate the opposition. It is a rarity to find someone with an open mind who does hate the extremes from either side or those who peddle that hate.
#6: "...my oldest second son hates green beans. He would monger against them all day long."
Oooh... I hate eggplant! I will monger against it until I draw my last breath, and perhaps even after that...
As for political hatemongers, I don't hate them. That only adds fuel to their flames. Generally, I ignore them. Hatemongers hate being ignored more than they monger against any single other thing.
There are liberal talking heads out there just as hateful as these guys, they're far less popular than conservative versions and that speaks volumes to the differences between the voters. Liberals want people able to empathize, or understand the other side. The neocons are totalitarians, they don't even want to admit that there is a counter argument to their agenda.
So, here is whom I consider the most hateful in today's media:
Mark Levin, Sean Hannazi, Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham, Ann Coulter. In that order.
Haters are that just haters. They can be on any side at any time. I am a liberal and I see hate coming from many people.
It seems to be the nature of the beast when people have different opinions. If there are differing ones than for some reason the other side must be wrong...
I am not sure what drives some people to hate, I am not a hating type of person but I know people who are nothing but hateful.
I agree with the professional hating angle and how they make a good living at it. How they sleep at night with themselves, I don't know. I wonder if hate stems from how they were raised?
#8.1: "...can you say more about what drives one from disagreement to hate?"
In my opinion, disagreements arise when one party is lacking information available to the other party. When all facts are made known, disagreements will vaporize, assuming that the parties involved are seeking truth, and not some private agenda...
... which brings us to the "hate" thing. Again, in my opinion, hate is the result of blind jealousy mixed with equal parts of misinformation and an unwillingness to seek the truth. A hater has the need to feel superior to someone, and this fact alone will create in the hater an eagerness to latch onto any excuse to escalate and justify the hatred.
For me, it is just too much work. Hate consumes the hater, and I really, really don't get it, why anyone can be that consumed by it. There are far more satisfying pursuits out there...
Oddly, I see hatemongering as not necessarily an act perpetrated by a genuine hater but, rather, by someone who sees an opportunity to stir up hatred in others, thereby getting real haters to do the dirty work in furtherance of some private agenda on the part of the hatemonger.
I like your description. Truth is, some people aren't interested in learning the "truth", they are only interested in prooving they are right and the other guy is wrong.
#9.1: "...they are only interested in prooving they are right and the other guy is wrong."
I think that sums it up nicely for 99% of the instances. The other 1%, I think, may simply be those who have a need to be contrary, and who will then take any opposing view as long as it is opposing. I refer to the ones who, if told they deserved a million dollars, would argue vehemently that they do not deserve it... and the more you differed, the more vociferously opposing they would become. Irrational, yes, but I really believe there is a small percentage out there who cannot agree with anyone else for any reason.
[...Oops... I think I just defined a troll, so perhaps that percentage is a wee bit greater...]
I agree with bitemore about jelousy and the need to feel superior but more so in the politicians. I'll add ego and selfishness to the media personalities. I am on the left and hate is spewed from both sides. S/he who yells hate the loudest is the biggest hatemonger. I can't really say who all the hatemongers are as I only know the most popular names. I just know not to listen to anyone who yells because s/he's likely telling the biggest, most hateful lies.
Mulie, once again I see why I just think the world of you! You certainly got that one nice and concisely... the media may well be the biggest hatemongering entity in the universe!
[...and we wonder why extra-terrestrials don't want to land here...]
I think that people like Limbaugh and Coulter (and Michael Moore) are in the entertainment business; they are the political equivalent of Howard Stern. They get their ratings, and income, based on how much they rally or upset people. I also think all of us have a mean streak, and that we laugh loudly when our side's talking head bashes the other side. It's just human nature.
For the record, I'm a conservative. Hate is a strong word, but I really, really, really don't like Rush or Coulter and never listen to them. I occasionally catch Hannity and O'Reilly because they seem popular at the gym I go to; I'm not impressed with either of them. Hannity has gone downhill alot since Alan Combs left. I read one of Alan's books; I don't agree with him much but I thought it was a good book. I looked at books written by Moore and Al Franken & couldn't get past a few pages. I refuse to waste 2 cents or 2 minutes of my time on a Michael Moore movie; I think he's a liar and terribly un-American but I don't hate him. I do, however, intend to watch "An Inconvenient Truth," though I haven't gotten around to it yet. I probably won't agree with it either, but I'm curious.

You may be onto something there. I'm gonna think about it, but I'm sure there's at least a grain of truth in that assessment, and perhaps more. I'm pretty sure I'm "guilty as charged," at least once in awhile, depending on which side of the bed I woke up on...
